Wednesday, November 30

Section 1: Complete the worksheet under 'Homework Documents' titled 'Electron and Noble Gas Configuration'. Don't forget, you will be having a test on Friday!

Section 2: Complete page 3 of the lab your received in class today. Also, make sure that you have completed the worksheet that was given out in class yesterday (electron configurations).

Tuesday, November 29

Section 1: Complete the worksheet we started today in class

Section 2: Follow the instructions for Section 1 from yesterday (including writing out the electron configurations). You have already watched most of the video in class. You can print out the pdf and then use the following link to fill it in:

Monday, November 28

Section 1: Under 'Homework Documents' you will see two items; one is a video that I made for you and the other is a pdf file of a blank periodic table. The video is a swf. file, which means you need Adobe Flash to watch it, if you have an older computer you can just watch it in Internet Explorer, or you can download a swf opener (just google swf file opener and you should find several options).

Watch the video and then fill in the periodic table with the electron configurations blocked out for each section. You should also color code it. There is an example image in the video.

Also, in your notebook, write out the electron configuration for Lithium, Barium and Phosphorus. Don't worry about making a mistake - we will go over it tomorrow in class.

Thank You!

Gents-

Thank you so much for your generosity towards our 'T-giving $' fund. I was able to use the $57 in cash to buy 12 cartons of shelf stable milk, 10 can of chicken broth and 2 cans of canned fruit. I also donated over $10 in coins to the Campus Ministry office to help them fund service trips! I am so proud to be the teacher of such generous young men...way to go!

Thursday, November 17th

Section 1: Complete your lab for homework

Section 2: Watch the following video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QI50GBUJ48s
Then, in your notebook design an experiment you think we could do to find emission spectra of a gas. Make sure to include the materials and procedure you would need. Be creative!

Wednesday, November 16

All Sections: Read Chapter 4, Section 1 in your textbook. Then complete problems on page 124 # 1, 5, 7, 8 & 9 in your notebook.

Tuesday, November 15

Section 1: Complete parts 2-3 of the assignment that was posted for Section 2 on Thursday.

Monday, November 14

Section 2: Complete all work possible for Activities 1-3 in the Elements, Compounds and Mixtures lab.

Thursday, November 10

Section 2: Complete all the steps below. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!

1) Copy the notes from slide 13 on the powerpoint (bottom of the page) into your notebook to complete today's discussion.

2) Watch the first minute and forty seconds of the following video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5h3h2E4z2Q

3) Use your notes, the powerpoint, your texbook and the video to complete the Quia assignment called 'Introduction to Electrons'. You should just type in your answers to the spaces provided. This assignment is NOT timed. You have until Sunday night to complete the Quia assignment.

4) Enjoy your long weekend!

Contemporary Chemistry Discussions

All: Our first discussion will take place tomorrow morning at 7:45 in room 3K3. Articles about this week's topic can be found at the bottom of the page, to the right of the powerpoint. Please feel free to look up/bring in other articles on the same topic. ALL future info about these discussions will be posted there.

See you in the morning!

Thursday, November 3

Section 2: Your quiz corrections are due on Monday. Also, here is a link with the answers to the problems you started today in class. Enjoy!

Molecular Formula Calculations

Wednesday, November 2

All Sections: Complete the following problems in your notebook:

1. A compound contains 36.48% Na, 25.41% S, and 38.11% O. Find its empirical formula.

2. Find the empirical formula of a compound that contains 53.7% iron and 46.30% sulfur.

3. (This one is tricky tricky but you can do it! Remember that you need your percentages to add up to 100 - and you CAN get that with the information given. Don't forget what you know about mole calculations and kick this problems butt!)
A compound containing sodium, chlorine, and oxygen is 25.42% sodium by mass. A 3.25 g sample give 4.33 x 10^22 atoms of oxygen. What is the empirical formula?

Tuesday, November 1

All Sections: Sorry for my absence today gents. Please copy from the powerpoint at the bottom of the page the notes on slides 34-44 into your notebook. I will check your notebooks - just printing out the slides is not completing the assignment.
